Alan Kent – My Journey

"My sources of inspiration have always been associated with my matters of interest, such as Nature, the stars, the unknown, the origins of human life on earth, myths, legends, magic, science, music, poetry, design, ancient cultures, human affairs. My subjects and themes generally fluctuate between reality and fantasy, ether and solid matter, dark and light, past-present-future.

This has been a journey of interpreting and transforming reality, using different languages that suit my inner dialogue, mood and search. I call it the quest for the ineffable utopia. It has been quite an interesting journey, and hopefully it will continue to be."

Biography

Recently established in Mahone Bay, Alan Kent Chávez was born in Peru in 1975.

From 2 to 10 years old, Alan lived in the rain forest of Peru where he developed a fascination for nature and the mysteries of creation, which later would influence his art.

The looming threat of terrorism in the mid 80’s resulted in the family’s move to the Coastal Region of Peru. After finishing school, Alan started his studies at the Art School, Escuela de Bellas Artes Macedonio de la Torre, where he studied for 5 years (1995-2000). He graduated with the school’s highest honour, the Gold Medal.

Alan’s art is part of private collections in several countries around the globe including United States, Canada, Mexico, Aruba, Peru, Argentina, France, Belgium, Australia, Thailand.

She was a virgin destined to become the priestess of an all women village under the protection of the Gods. But one day she fell in love with a foreigner and left the village with him because the Gods didn't accept the relationship. The Gods loved the woman so they couldn't just kill her. Instead, to try and separate them, they turned the woman into a tree, thinking the man would abandon her in this condition. But the man stood by her side, and everyday he would play beautiful melodies for her to appease her heart. Eventually, he himself became part of the tree and they stay together defying the God's wrath. The flower that blooms represent the triumph of their love. The animals represent the fact that even thought they won't be able to birth children of their own, they will be shelter for other creatures.

Based on stories about Lilith, the first woman ever created. She commands the spirits and is giving the middle finger to those who cast her out of paradise for not subduing to the law and authority of men. She births her own paradise represented by the flower that grows from her navel. That flower's name is "The bird of paradise". The gladiolus and lilies are gifts from admirers who know they cannot possess her.

Based on the story of ancient humanoid entities who were couples of male-female, female-female, and male-male, and were bound together sharing one body. Often times I find myself dreaming of floating and flying. It's one of the dreams I love the most. It feels like a natural thing to do in my dreams, as if an innate nature and often times I wonder why people around me are not flying. Every time I dream of this I am aware of it and tell myself "enjoy the time spent here, take the best out of it!", and so I fly above cities, towns and places I had never been; among trees, above beaches, oceans, space, stars, even strange planes of matter I have never personally seen in my awake mode. I go touching, feeling and sensing everything to the maximum. I also recreate my art "discoveries", the way I transform reality or the way of representing something. That is evident in the animals around me. The child flying a kite while he runs around the moon, is the memory of my childhood. The eyes that gaze through a wall is the awoken me, my consciousness, present even in this more subconscious experience.

2 interpretations.
- Blessing of a same sex marriage. Two men being blessed of their commitment by a pagan like entity-officiant, since same sex unions are not allowed in several parts of the world, including Peru. The masks represent the secretive nature of the theme.
- 3 piece self portrait. Communion of mind, body and soul. The two seated figures represent dual aspects of me, as well as my mind and body. The central figure represents my soul and my spiritual (non religious) aspect, the things that are more holy and close to my heart of hearts. It's nature is less material and more ethereal. The 3 faces represent the vision of past, present and future.

This painting represents my anchoring into Canada. I came from the Pacific Ocean into the Atlantic one. The boat represents me and my journey. A birch tree is growing from the boat, as if the boat's wood regrows into a new type of tree which I never saw before while living in Peru. And the tree which represents my creative and imaginative process, morphs and flows into shapes, colors, symbolizing the new art I will be creating in this stage of my life experience here in Canada. The woman represents my muses and they look into the horizon for the new perspectives and possibilities in this new land. The swan represents my commitment and loyalty to my artistic vision.

Mom used to call me "cute kitty" because I love fish. Well, back in Peru (Pacific Ocean) we had plenty of variety of fish, lot of which you don't find here in Nova Scotia, Canada (Atlantic Ocean).
